With the development of new commercial camera and systems technologies in high-definition television (HDTV) and digital cinema and research into very high spatial and temporal rates there is an increasing capability to meet the needs of the military community for large format, high resolution, and high speed motion imagery. To effectively leverage the benefits of these emerging technologies within DoD/IC/USIGS the MISB has established a new working group to address standards for interoperability of new systems.

The MISB has established the working group, which shall be known as the Advanced Motion Imagery Working Group (AMIWG). The AMIWG is the principal focus within the MISB for all advanced motion imagery. Advanced motion imagery is defined as being beyond the spatial, temporal, and dimensional capabilities of current and near term DoD systems for which Standards and Recommended Practices (RP) exist as defined by the Motion Imagery Standards Profile (MISP) 4.3. Standards efforts that are in motion imagery standards levels (MISL) identified in the Motion Imagery Standards Profile as ÒAdvanced High Definition Motion ImageryÓ (MISL 12-14). Collectively this range of standards shall also be referred herein as Òadvanced motion imageryÓ. The primary function of the AMIWG is to address advanced motion imagery as a key enabling technology. The AMIWG will report findings and make recommendations for action to the MISB.

The AMIWG is chartered with accomplishing the following objectives:

  • Advising the MISB of technological trends (including possible future standards development), research requirements for various DoD applications, forming technology teams to address specific technological issues, and acting as a coordinating body for DoD research in the fields related to advanced motion imagery.
  • Supporting development, by organizations outside of the MISB and NGA, MIPO, of advanced motion imagery standards and RPs supporting motion imagery collection, processing, exploitation, display and dissemination
  • Fostering close working relationships with existing and future U.S. Government and commercial motion imagery programs in the area of advanced motion imagery.
  • Coordinating closely with other DoD/IC/USIGS standards groups ensuring that advanced motion imagery standards are correctly reflected in other standards, directives, and guidelines.
  • Conducting advanced motion imagery studies as directed by the MISB.
  • Maintaining an awareness of advanced motion imagery technologies and new developments that could advance advanced high definition motion imagery practices within the DoD/IC/USIGS community.
  • Promoting awareness and technical understanding of advanced high definition motion imagery standards and technologies within the DoD/IC/USIGS community.
