The Motion Imagery Tradecraft Working Group (MITWG) is a collaborative government/industry working group focused on the challenges of collecting, storing, retrieving, processing, and analyzing large volumes of motion imagery for the development of intelligence and for the support of military operations. MITWG participation will be open to all government and industry individuals who wish to participate. Meetings will be held both at the unclassified and secret levels. Meetings will be held approximately twice a year.

MITWG's mission focus is on the exploitation of airborne motion imagery Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) data from platforms such as the USAF Predator, the USA FCS Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), the USN Rotorcraft UAV and Wide Area Persistent Surveillance (WAPS) systems, also known as Large Volume Streaming Data (LVSD). Participation from other motion imagery domains is strongly encouraged, however. The airborne motion imagery mission has challenges that are common with: the broadcast industry; the video surveillance and security industry; ground-based motion imagery intelligence collection; and the foreign broadcast monitoring community.

The goals of the MITWG are as follows:

  • Bring together MI analysts and technology developers.
  • Cross-educate each other as to:

    • State of the practice in ISR motion imagery exploitation.
    • Emerging tools for motion imagery processing, storage, editing, enhancement, analysis, indexing, retrieval, and distribution technologies.
  • MITWG analyst and technologist members will jointly define and perform tasks of broad strategic benefit for the community at large. Examples of such tasks:

    • Develop and document a common architecture motion imagery Tasking, Processing, Exploitation and Dissemination System (TPEDS): to include collection; pre-processing; storage; metadata representation and encoding; indexing and retrieval; content-based mining; enhancement; analysis; multi-media intelligence reporting; distribution; archiving and management.
    • Develop and document concepts of operation and measures of operational effectiveness or payoff for improved or advanced motion imagery exploitation processes.
    • Develop and document a near term road map, identifying existing technologies that can be incorporated into an improved motion imagery exploitation environment over the next 1-3 years.
    • Develop and document a long term road map, identifying motion imagery exploitation challenges that R&D conducted over the longer term (2-10 years) may be able to address.
